WEBSERVER ROOT

Hi:
I have a bugging question what is a webserver???. this is not only programe that says install to the ==ROOT OF THE WEBSERVER==
what or where is the ROOT of A web server?. I know it should be differant if I am on a mac or a pc.

c:\
c:\xampp
c:\xampp\apache


Please any help in explaning this term will make things easyer.
